Golden Milk Latte - with a twist
So. Golden Milk. Have you tried this nourishing warming hug in a mug? If not, grab a couple pantry staples and sit down with one of these and your favourite book. That is an afternoon ritual I can get behind!
This warming drink has its roots steeped in Ayurveda, traditionally known as as haldi doodh, golden milk has become famous for its healing, anti-inflammatory properties largely thanks to Curcumin, the active component found in turmeric.
Curcumin has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, its anti-inflammatory properties aiding those with breathing problems, joint pain, fatigue, digestive issues, and more.
There is mounting evidence that also suggests turmeric is a potent antioxidant with antimicrobial and anticancer effects. Something to note when consuming turmeric, its active compound is only activated when consumed with black pepper (perperine which is the compound found in black pepper, enables the activation). It also stains !! So be aware white shirt wearers ;)
Although turmeric gets most of the spotlight, the other spices in golden milk are also health-promoting! Both ginger and cinnamon are known for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits as well as supporting digestion and blood sugar regulation.
Ok enough convincing! How to enjoy this drink-
For two servings:
In a small saucepan mix:
1 1/2 cups coconut milk
1 1/2 cups rice/almond/soy/nut mylk
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 1/2 tsp turmeric (freshly grated or dried)
1 cinnamon quill
1/4 tsp Ginger (freshly grated or dried)
Pinch of black pepper
1 tbsp maple syrup /raw honey
Whisk to combine and warm over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Around 4- 5 minutes.
For the twist, rather than using maple/honey as the sweetener, use banana milk:
Blend up 1/2 a spotty banana with a dash of the golden milk, add back into the saucepan, warm briefly and pour.
